Sauvie Island Center Field Trip 9/22

What a fun and fantastic day on the farm! We learned about plant parts, worms, compost, seeds, soil, and more! We were lucky enough to have the opportunity to pick and sample a variety of vegetables and herbs straight from the garden, including tomatoes, celery, fennel, dill, kale, and swiss chard. The giant cucumbers were a huge hit! It is amazing how everything tastes better when it is picked and eaten fresh! We even planted lima bean seeds using worm castings, which we took back to school to grow. We will be building on and applying these experiences this year as we continue learning about composting, gardening, food webs, and photosynthesis.

Welcome to the New School Year!

Hello!

I'm so glad you found your way to our classroom blog! Here you will find posts and pictures from exciting projects, field trips, and events in our classroom.

It's hard to believe we've been back in school for a week already! We're off to a great start! The first week of school included learning new routines, building our classroom community, and discovering new roles and responsibilities for 5th grade. We are learning important new jobs which we will take on throughout the year, including being Kindergarten reading buddies, Lunch helpers (serving lunch and helping in the kitchen), and Recycling Rockstars. These jobs are some of the ways that we play an active role in our school community throughout the year.

We have also been working hard on building our classroom community by discussing ground rules and expectations, participating in Morning Meetings, sharing our writing and thinking, and playing a variety of games. Pictured below are two examples from our Heart Map activity, based on "My Map Book" by Sara Fanelli. This art project helped us share things that are important to each of us.
