Writing Persuasive Essays to Create Change

Over the past month, our class has been researching, discussing, and writing about an important issue that affects their lives: Should schools serve chocolate milk with lunch? We have researched the nutritional content of different kinds of milk and the long-term health impacts of sugary drinks, Students learned to choose a position based on the research, determine their most important reasons for thinking as they do, and back up their reasons with evidence. You can read some the persuasive essays students wrote on this topic on our writing blog here; Kidblog- Ms. Perry's 5th grade.

This week, we are surveying each student in all grades using the program "Survey Monkey", in order to determine how a change in the school's lunchtime milk offerings would affect students at SIA as a whole. After analyzing the results of this research, we will make recommendations to Ms. Meeuwsen about this issue and explain the likely results of any changes, as predicted by our survey. This project has been a great opportunity to integrate a place-based focus with important skills students need to learn in fifth grade!
