All About 5th Grade!

Welcome to 5th Grade at SIA!

I am looking forward to a wonderful year! Here is an overview of our curriculum for this year.

Math

Through the Bridges 2nd Edition curriculum, students are consistently provided opportunities to use a hands-on approach to math and discuss and share ideas with peers through investigations and problem solving. Fifth grade math skills include:

  • Expressions, equations, and volume
  • Adding and subtracting fractions
  • Decimal place value, operations with decimals
  • Multiplying and dividing whole numbers and decimals
  • Multiplying and dividing fractions
  • Graphing and geometry

Language Arts

We will be using Reading and Writing Workshops for focused instruction and practice in Common Core reading and writing skills. Independent reading is one of the most important and valuable parts of our reading program, during which students read self-selected, just-right books. This year, students will be asked to select books from variety of genres for independent reading. In addition, interactive read-alouds will allow us to delve deeper into ideas such as theme, characterization, and author’s purpose using celebrated literature and non-fiction. Teacher-led guided reading and student-led literature circles will round out our reading instruction

****Students should read in a book of their choice 20-30 minutes every day outside of school.  Students should bring a book to read to school with them each day. Students will have opportunities to borrow books from the school or classroom library.

During Writing Workshop, students will craft stories and texts in a variety of genres, often driven by their own interests and initiative. Students will complete at least one finished piece in Narrative, Informational, and Opinion writing during the year. Students receive support from peers and myself at each step of the writing process and also learn to independently evaluate their own ideas and writing. Frequent opportunities to share and publish writing will be provided.
