Students select their top picks from a list of possible books for the literature circles. Then, I place them in small groups based on their preferences. Students work together to set their own reading schedule as a group. Each student prepares written responses to the book before each meeting, which they can use to recall what they've read and keep the conversation going. Their written responses can include summaries, quotes, real-life connections, questions, and illustrations. Here are some of the great books students have read in literature circles so far this year:
- The Witch of Blackbird Pond
- My Side of the Mountain
- Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
- The Sign of the Beaver
- The Birchbark House
- Brian's Winter
- James and the Giant Peach
